Govt. tells visiting UN official

United Nations Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes yesterday praised the Sri Lankan government for having resettled a large number of the 300,000 internally displaced persons in the North.

Holmes visited the Menik Farm Welfare Centre in Settikulam, Vavuniya yesterday.

He also inspected the Kadirgamar, Arunachulam and Ananada Coomaraswamy relief villages in the North and said that he was pleased with the facilities provided to IDPs.

Holmes was welcomed by Vavuniya Government Agent P. S. M. Charles and the Vanni Security Forces Commander Major General Kamal Gunaratne.

Major General Gunaratne said that all the displaced persons would be resettled by January 31, 2010. The resettlement process might even be completed by the end of this year.

Holmes arrived in the country on Tuesday for a four-day official visit on the invitation of Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.

Soon after his arrival, Holmes left for Jaffna and Vavuniya to inspect the ongoing resettlement and development processes conducted by the Sri Lanka government.

Sir John Holmes is scheduled to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa today (19).

This is the fourth visit by the top ranking UN official to Sri Lanka this year.
